Route along the Peñon del Ifach: Red Route of the Natural Park

The route along the Peñon de Ifach or Red Route of the Natural Park offers a unique experience, divided into two distinctive segments for visitors. On the one hand, the first segment goes from the Visitor Centre to the tunnel. A cobbled path of low difficulty characterises this part of the route, offering accessibility and a pleasant environment for all visitors, especially for families with children.

On the other hand, once visitors reach the tunnel, they begin the second section of the route along the Peñon de Ifach or the Red Route of the Natural Park. The segment that goes from the tunnel to the summit. Here, the difficulty increases considerably. In addition to the risk it already presents (polished and slippery rocks), the path becomes more irregular and dangerous, and for this reason, the current regulations restrict access to children under 18 years of age. In this part, it is essential to use your hands at several points in order to advance safely.

Since 2020, it is mandatory to make a reservation in advance to access this Red Route of the Natural Park. Moreover, the number of visitors per day is limited to 300, which helps to preserve the natural environment. If you venture out without booking, you can be fined up to 600 euros.

Route of the Red Route of the Natural Park: Step by step of the route around the Peñon de Ifach

The route begins with an asphalt walkway (yellow point) that immediately connects with the archaeologically valuable site of the Medieval Town of Ifach (1). Shortly after, you will reach the Visitor Centre (2), where there is probably an exhibition that you can visit. In this area you will find baths and fountains that can prove very useful before setting off on the path towards the tunnel. 

The tunnel connects with a cobbled path protected by wooden railings (3) that runs under the shade of the pines, and gradually climbs upwards. The ascent zigzags upwards (4), passing several viewpoints until it reaches an unlit tunnel (5) with ropes. This is where the first segment or section ends and where anyone under 18 years of age must stop.

Once through the tunnel, the route offers a marked fork that leads to the Carabineros viewpoint (7), where you can enjoy the rich endemic and protected flora of the Peñon. The final stretch towards the summit is the most demanding. It is a mountain path (8) where caution is paramount, due to the polished and slippery finish of the limestone rock. This stretch is not advisable without suitable footwear.  

At the end of the ascent, you will be rewarded with a panoramic view of the entire Mediterranean landscape and the surrounding mountain ranges of Alicante (from left to right: Serra Gelada, Puig Campana, Toix, Oltà, Bèrnia, el Cau, el Montgó, el Puig de la Llorença and many others). Parking at Peñon de Ifach

At the foot of the Peñon de IFach there is a public car park for vehicles, but if it is full, a good alternative would be the large open space next to the “Salinas”. From here, it will only take you 10 minutes on foot to reach the start of the route up.
